After You Submit
Declaration and Signature Pages We must have physical signatures on file to show that you have read and understood your responsibilities. You do so by signing (in several places) your Declaration and Signature Page. If someone else (Parent, Spouse/Partner) provided information on your application, then he and/or she must also sign a separate declaration and signature page(s). All declaration and signature pages are personalized and can be printed once you submit your application. Important: we must also have all signatures on file before we can release any of your aid.
What you have been waiting for – how much aid you will get. Use the estimate to help plan your school year. Remember, it is only an estimate and may change if we get information from other sources or if there are changes in your situation. If you don’t want to apply yet, but would like an idea on the amount of aid available, try the Aid Estimator.
Review of your Application
When we receive your application we check it over to ensure that all your information is complete. If there's an issue, your application will be put on hold until the issue is cleared up. We will let you know what you have to do. You may need to provide new information and/or documents.
You can check your status online. It's a good idea to do this to monitor progress and make sure everything is on-track.
It's very important to make sure you let the Ministry and/or your financial aid office know about any changes to your situation once you've applied for OSAP and while you are receiving OSAP. Changes to your family situation or income may affect your eligibility and amount of your aid.
Changes can also come from other sources, such as your school, the National Student Loan Service Centre or other government agencies, or as part of the verification process.
Anytime something on your application is changed, your application will be evaluated to ensure your information is complete.
Information from Your School Your school must also provide program information and costs, such as program start and end dates and tuition fees.
For public colleges and universities, this process is automated, and so there is nothing you need to do.
If you're going to a Private Career College, then the ministry will send a request to your school to get information. It's a good idea to follow up with your school to make sure they send what's needed as you're ultimately responsible for making sure this information is provided.
For a school outside of Ontario, you need to fill out the top part of a Program Information formand send it to your school for them to complete the rest. Your school can send it in to the ministry or you can. Again, you're ultimately responsible for making sure this form is completed and received by the ministry.
Confirmation of Enrolment Before your aid can be released, you and your school must complete a Confirmation of Enrolment form. This is a personalized form printed by the ministry. It is used:
- by you to update your income information,
- by you and your school to confirm your study period information, and
- by your school to confirm that you have registered for and begun classes.
Because this form is personalized with your information, it is printed by the ministry. Once completed, the process for releasing your aid begins.
How to Get Your Confirmation of Enrolment Students Studying In Canada Your Confirmation of Enrolment form is printed and forwarded to your financial aid office just prior to the start of school. However, you can't pick it up from your financial aid office until you have registered and begun classes. Check with your financial aid office for more information.
Students Studying Outside Canada Your Confirmation of Enrolment form is printed and mailed directly to you by the ministry. The ministry mails it (and your funding certificate) a few weeks before your classes are scheduled to begin. Be sure to keep your address up to date.
How to Complete Your Confirmation of Enrolment On your Confirmation of Enrolment form, you must review the income information that we have on file and indicate any change to that information. It's important to understand that any change that you provide on this form will be updated on your file and used to reassess your application. You also must sign the declaration.
Your school must confirm your enrolment by updating and signing the Confirmation of Enrolment section. Your school will forward the form to the ministry. If you are going to school outside Canada, you are responsible for forwarding the form to the ministry.
Deadline Date for Confirmation of Enrolment The Confirmation of Enrolment Form must be received and processed by the ministry no later than 30 days before the end of your current study period in order for you to get your aid.
Verification of Your Information We check the information on your application. Information you reported on your application and information we get from your documentation or an organization such as the Canadian Revenue Agency must be consistent. If there is any difference, your application will be placed on hold. You'll be asked to provide an explanation and may also have to supply supporting documents (e.g., vehicle appraisal) to substantiate your claim.
What we verify for full-time applicants:
Social Insurance Number and Personal Identification Information Your Social Insurance Number and basic personal information (first and last name, date of birth, and gender) will be verified with the Social Insurance Registry at Human Resources and Social Development Canada. Generally this happens as soon as your application is received and before any aid is calculated.
If you didn't receive a loan last year, we'll do a credit check. If you've been 90 days in arrears on three or more personal loans or credit accounts, each with a value of $1,000 or more, within the past three years, you may not be eligible for aid. Generally this happens as soon as your application is received and before any aid is calculated.
Vehicles and Ontario Driver's Licence All vehicle registration and Ontario driver's license information is verified with the Ministry of Transportation. We also verify the fair market value of your vehicle(s) with the Ministry of Finance. If you're married or in a common-law relationship, the value of your spouse's or partner's vehicle(s) is also verified. Generally this happens as soon as your application is received and before any aid is calculated.
Income with Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) All income information is verified with CRA. If there's a discrepancy between the income reported on your OSAP application and the income information received from CRA, we will use the income information from CRA to assess or reassess your application. If there is a significant variance between the income information, you may become ineligible for any further aid. Income is verified at different stages depending on whose income we are verifying.
The effect of a discrepancy may also be different. This table will help illustrate different scenarios:
Income
| Conditions
| Tax
Year
| When verified
| Effect of a discrepancy
| Spouse or partner's income
| If you're married or in a common-law relationship
| Previous tax year
| As soon as application is received.
| Generally verification is completed before aid is calculated. In this case, the income amount from
CRA is used in the calculation of aid. However, if aid has already been calculated, your application will be reassessed.
| Parent's income
| If the ministry considers you a dependent student
| Previous tax year
| As soon as application is received.
| Generally verification is completed before aid is
calculated. In this case, the income amount from
CRA is used in the calculation of aid. However, if aid has already been calculated, your application will be reassessed.
| Student's income
| All students
| Current tax year
| Approximately one year after you apply (because we have to wait for you to file your current year's income tax return.)
| Your application will be reassessed using the income amount from CRA. If the income you reported to CRA is higher than the income you reported on your OSAP application, the reassessment may result in an overpayment.

Provincial Social Assistance We work closely with the Ministry of Community and Social Services to ensure there is no duplication of aid. If you're receiving OSAP aid in addition to income support from Ontario Works or the Ontario Disability Support Program for the same time period, you must contact your social assistance caseworker to report your OSAP aid.
It's your responsibility to keep track of the status of your application:
The best way to find out about your application is to log in and check your status on this website. You can find out:
- Application status - where your application is in the processing steps
- Checklist - things that have to be done before you can get your aid
- Documents you have to provide – keep track of what you have to do
- Amount of aid - amount of loans, grants, bursaries and/or scholarships and when they’ll be available
- Help - who to contact for additional help
Notification from OSAP PaperOn your application you can indicate that you want paper notification from the ministry. This option is also available after you submit your application so you can change your mind at any time. Please note that this option covers all applications you have on file.
If you don’t want paper notification and provide us with your email address, we’ll send you an email whenever anything changes on your file. The email won’t contain any personal information – you’ll need to log on and check your status to see what’s changed.
Please provide a secure, private email address that is only accessible by you.
If you submit an online application, status information is generally available within five days. If you submit a paper application, it takes four to six weeks after submission for updates to appear on the OSAP website.
Having Someone Else Check Your Application Status The Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act doesn’t allow OSAP or your financial aid office to release information about your application to anyone other than you - unless you tell us to.
If you want someone such as your spouse or parents to check the status of your application, then use the Consent to the Release of Personal Information section of your application to tell us who that person(s) is.
The consent applies to all information contained in your OSAP file for the academic year you’re applying to and all prior academic years. The consent expires on the last day of the sixth month after the end of that study period.
You can change the consent information at any time. To do this, you need to forward a signed letter to your Financial Aid Office indicating the following:
- who you wish to give access to and/or who you wish to remove from your list of authorized person(s)
- name of the person(s)
- date of birth of the person
- your Social Insurance Number
- the academic year
- date and signature
