People like to talk about liberty.but what is liberty?according to the dictionary, liberty is the freedom and the right to do whatever you want without asking permission or being afraid of authority.but in reality people always see the word liberty in different ways.the definition of liberty is highly individual and is evolving all the time.To Thomas Jefferson liberty means the freedom to do business with whatever country in whatever ways without the fear of being the victim of a wanton tax regime imposed by the British monarch.but if you ask those slaves who labored in his house while Jefferson was busy penning the declaration of independence their definition of liberty would definitely has nothing to do with trade and bussiness but rather about reunion with his wife and children who have been sold to slave owners thousands of miles away.not only people of different classes have different understanding of liberty but also people of different times struggle for different "kinds" of liberty.black slaves joined the federal army in the civil war to fight for their corporal freedom .Martin luther king led the march in washington DC to voice their extreme discontent with omnipresent racial discrimination. Now Trayvon Martin'killing prompt people to hit the street to protest against race-related violence in florida.so we can see liberty means different things in different times.dispite the fact that the meaning of liberty is evoving continuously one thing is certain that people's pursuit of liberty will see no end.
