Toronto under heat alert, humidex advisory
TORONTO, Ont. - Toronto's Medical Officer of Health has issued a heat alert, which will be in effect until further notice.
Members of the public are encouraged to stay cool, drink lots of fluids and call or visit family and friends, especially those at highest risk of suffering from a heat-related illness.
Also affecting the GTA and much of cottage country is a humidex advisory. Although Saturday's high is 30 C, temperatures with the humidex rating are expected to reach the low 40s.
Those most at risk include seniors, people with chronic or pre-existing health problems, infants and young children and the homeless.
The City of Toronto has several tips for the public to beat the heat. It is recommended that you do things like drink water or juice before you feel thirsty and go to air conditioned places like shopping malls or local libraries and community centres,
The city also recommends you wear loose-fitting, light-coloured clothing, stay out of the sun and reduce strenuous outdoor physical activity, especially during peak heat hours.
As always, people are reminded not to leave children, the elderly or pets inside hot vehicles. |
