Civilian Careers As a civilian member of the VPD, you will join more than 400 other civilians and 1,300 sworn police officers as they work toward the Department's vision of making our community the safest major city in Canada.
Civilian members enjoy a wide variety of opportunities within the Department, often working side by side with investigators, patrol constables and senior officers.
Civilians perform key roles in areas that range from the Mounted Squad to Criminal Intelligence. Their duties are often exciting and rewarding in many ways. Civilian members enjoy generous benefits, attractive working conditions and job stability. Many of our members who have children enjoy choosing shiftwork or compressed work weeks, because it better fits their family life.
Becoming a civilian member of one of Canada’s largest police departments means you have chosen a career that is more than just a job, one that is highly respected and appreciated by the residents in our community.
Qualifications The wide variety of civilian jobs at the VPD means that a wide variety of skills, education and personalities are needed. The majority of civilian positions are in our Information Management Section. Basic qualifications required for Information Management positions include:
- Grade 12, plus clerical experience
- typing 50 wpm
- Microsoft Word 70% proficiency
- Microsoft Excel 70% proficiency
- data entry – 6,000 keystrokes per hour
Other useful Information Management skills:
- previous work in a police environment
- volunteer experience with various police agencies
- Canadian Police Information Centre (CPIC) database experience
- education background in Criminology or Law
- excellent interpersonal and communication skills to deal tactfully and effectively with the public and staff
- ability to multi-task
- person of good character
Some of our areas require special skills, such as Transcription Services, the Photo Lab, Finance and others.
Criminal Analysis is an emerging field and the Department now employs 12 crime analysts and two intelligence analysts. The Department encourages anyone interested in this field to contact B.C.I.T. for more information on their Crime and Intelligence Analysis Program.
