Hi Stephen,
Many things Emily Dickinson said about what poetry was I don't quite agree now as opposed to ten years ago. She said without thought a poem was not a poem, and she didn't really care about the formality, and she disliked the flowery Victorian style.
In my view, a poem doesn't have to have a thought. It can express a mood, or describe a sight. Flowery is not necessarily bad if it is beautiful and original.
A Tang Dynasty writer, who died at the age of 28, left us two beautiful lines which many people like--
