York Pre-Graduate Preparation Program (YP3)
The York Pre-Graduate Preparation Program (YP3) is designed for international students who are interested in attending graduate studies at North American universities. The program runs for seven months and is divided into two 3.5 month terms (of approx. 25 classroom hours/week).
First Term
The first term focuses on improving students’ general and academic English skills to a level that enables them to function successfully in a graduate program. It also introduces students to the practical considerations of doing research, of narrowing a research focus; of choosing an institution, department and supervisor that specialize in that area of research; and of applying to graduate school.
Second Term
The second term focuses on the research, critical reading and writing skills that are required to succeed in Master’s and PhD programs. It examines the signs of good research, typical research questions and theses statements. It also examines literature reviews through various media - academic journals, books, Internet searches, documentaries and interviews - while also reviewing basic types of research, exploratory and problem-solving research among them. It teaches students how to use focal theory and data theory in defense of Master’s and PhD theses, and how to lay out theses according to chapters, headings and sub-headings.
Final Project
At the end of the second term, participants will prepare an independent academic-professional communications project. No classes will run during this period, but there will be workshops, and program instructors will keep office hours for individual appointments. This portfolio is intended to be a collection of documents that will be as useful as possible to participants in their futures. The types of documents it includes are those that working professionals today are asked to produce repeatedly throughout their careers. Participants will be able to revisit and update this portfolio, as a matter of professional reflective practice, in the future. Successful completion of YP3 will partly depend on completion of this project in the allotted time.
To be eligible for the YP3, students should have:
attained an IELTS score of at least 5.5, or a TOEFL iBT of at least 69 (TOEFL CBT, 196; TOEFL Paper, 525)
OR
attained an overall average of 68% on the placement test to be considered for the YP3
All applicants must have proof of successful completion of an undergraduate degree.
