Update: Earthquake tremors felt in Victoria area
By Matthew Pearson, Times ColonistJune 6, 2009Comments (7)
A small earthquake, measuring Magnitude 2, was felt in the Victoria area about 4 a.m. today.
“It was a minor shake,” said John Cassidy, a seismologist with Natural Resources Canada.
The department received at least 100 separate reports of the quake by 9 a.m. and another 50 by mid afternoon.
It was felt throughout the Capital Region, but there are no reports of damage.
“I wouldn’t expect damage from a quake this size,” Cassidy said. “It’s just a good reminder we live in an active area.”
Earthquakes are common in this area. Cassidy said there are typically three or four small ones each year.
Thisis the second quake felt in the Victoria area in 2009. The first was inJanuary when a small earthquake in Washington State was felt by some inthis area. |
