“Send In TheClowns”是美国百老汇作曲家Stephen Sondheim的音乐剧《A Little NightMusic 》中的一首歌，音乐剧改编自Ingmar Bergman1955年的电影《Smilesof a SummerNight》，说的是一对老情人，在各自的感情中兜兜转转，最终还是回到对方身边。
后来，Fredrik发现年轻的妻子跟自己的儿子产生了感情，看到两个年轻人热情奔放的爱，他这才感到，最了解自己，最眷顾着自己的，还是过去的情人。于是，他回到了老情人Desiree的怀抱，跟她一起唱起了“SendIn The Clowns”。
“Send In TheClowns”字面意思是“叫小丑来吧”，实际上在马戏表演不顺利的时候，让小丑来做出各种滑稽表演逗大家笑，以便圆场和掩盖尴尬。在爱情的舞台上也是一样，如果你的表演没有得到相应的回报，必然会伤心尴尬，于是希望让小丑登场吧，缓和气氛，掩盖痛苦。或者，最后发现在别人的眼里，你自己根本就是这个舞台上的小丑，是不是很可笑呢？
所以这可以算是一首失恋歌，有点伤感，也有点自嘲的失恋歌。在网上找到一个说法，把歌词里面的这一句“Me here at last on the ground, and you inmid-air"联系到”失恋就像是做空中飞人，你纵身一跳，搭档却没有接住你“，的确真的是很形象的比喻！
Elizabeth Taylor在改编电影里的这个版本是我以前没听过的，她用苍老的声音演绎倒是很适合歌曲的意境。
Judy Collins的版本是最有名的，这个video不错，把歌词做了进去。
