I do!!!  Please don't take this as racist, I consider it more of an observation and am curious why...

I worked in Toronto for many years and there's a considerably large Chinese population there (I've heard the 2nd most spoken language in Canada is Chinese).  I worked in a building with several language schools and there were a lot of chinese students.  My question is basically this:

Why do Chinese people, especially the younger generations, have absolutely no manners at all?

Hear me out...  I can't count the number of times a Chinese person will push their way in front of a lineup; storm into an elevator before anyone has a chance to get out; let doors slam in your face behind them; stand at the bottom of an escalator for a chat, blocking everybody's way... I could go on and on.  It's like they're completely obvlivious to anyone else around them, wearing blinders everywhere they go.  Here in Canada, this is considered rude, inconsiderate and in some cases can get you a punch in the mouth.

I was going down in an elevator with some guy and we hit the lobby.  I let him go first and just as he gets to the door this Chinese girl about 15 or so just barges into the doorway and stands there in front of him, staring at the ground.  He gently took her by the shoulders, physically moved her out of the way and we exited but for the love of god...

I was told once that this behavior is because in China, if you don't personally know someone, they aren't worthy of your consideration...  Is that true?

Apologies if I sound... inconisderate myself but in our culture, it really tests the patience.  I've met many older Chinese who are the nicest and most polite people you could meet so I don't just have a hangup with the Chinese.

Just innocently curious, no reflection on you of course.  (unless you wear blinders when you go out

Trust me I feel absolutely the same. Many chinese are ill-mannered assholes. The reasons are too complicated. Last time i was in the subway, the train came and suddenly everyone just pushed forward and crowded towards the doors i couldn't even stand on my feet, you know, carried away by the crowd. Worst of all, there was this dickhead right behind me who was pushing so hard he made a little kid next to him cry. The kid was squeezed. Can you believe that? I didn't until then. So I turned around and saw this dirty country bumpkin with the classical "none-of-my-business" look and i shouted WTF DO YOU THINK YOU ARE DOING? I dunno but when kids get hurt it's like a surge came up to my head.......
And then there are the nice n polite people too.

Well, I'm an American living in China for 5 years now and let me give you a few impressions (good and bad):

1.  Most Chinese are xenophobic - - they don't really like westerners or even other Asians coming into their country due to mistrust and fear.  A lot of this xenophobia comes from WWII and the Japanese invasion while a lot of it comes from government propaganda.  Many Chinese still can't get over what was done (The Rape of Nanjing) at that time and are simply awaiting the time some such thing will happen again.

2.  Apparently, many Chinese have never seen a "laowai" such as me.  I'm 47, white, hairy, and fat (the perfect "bear" type I guess).  I am clean, shaved face, wear my hair neat and short and wear clean, nice clothes.  However, no matter where I go, from international cities such as Shanghai to more rural areas, you'd think the locals have NEVER seen someone such as me.  They look me up and down from head to toe to check out every inch of my hairy, fatness.  That's fine, I guess, but then they also talk about me IN FRONT OF ME assuming I can't understand a word of Chinese! (I'm far from fluent but I have a general grasp of the language).  They'll nudge each other and then their friend will blatantly turn around and stare goggle-eyed and then they'll talk and laugh and point.  This is 21st century China we're talking about where pirated DVDs run supreme and the internet is quite common.  Surely a large percentage of these starers have seen a western movie or magazines or websites that have people such as me featured.  Parents point me out to their children and old men want to come up and rub my stomach.  Children may want to pet my hairy arms like a zoo animal.  It's all so surreal.

I can't help noticing during my 5+ years in China that most Chinese talk the talk about being proud of their country and their government but every other Chinese citizen I talk to seems to want to LEAVE China for better education, better jobs, more money, a better lifestyle.  It just doesn't add up.  As a foreigner in China, I make a LOT more money than your average Chinese citizen.  I don't work any harder - - hell, I actually work LESS than most of my Chinese colleagues.

Soon, however, the Chinese government is going to up the price of gasoline (right after the Olympics, I've heard) and of course that's going to up the price of most everything else: food, travel, taxi cabs, bus fare, etc.  These poor, proud Chinese who live off a few yuan a day are going to suffer the most.  Where are the government-sponsored programs to help these people?

I've read in the news recently that grieving parents of children who were crushed to death when the schools collapsed in the recent earthquake are now being basically forced to take a small settlement and to shut up about it.  No more complaining to local authorities.  No more petitioning for something to be done to those that actually built those flimsy schools.  No more talking to the press (which of course is a censored press anyway).  If they do there is every chance they will be taken away and beaten until they acquiesce.  And if they DON'T take the money offered out of pride or disgust or whatever, then they'll get no monetary compensation at all.  One man defeatedly conceded with the logic of "everyone else is signing the agreement, so I may as well do so too." (paraphrasing, obviously)

So it's not only a Tibet thing, rather it's a country that has overgrown and overused its resources due to massive overpopulation and a government that is either not willing or not able to control the country in a positive and meaningful way.  Many Tibetans, now that so many Chinese "businessmen" have set up shop there, are worried (and rightly so in my opinion) that their small space is going to become overrun, overpopulated, natural resources used up, and basically just another arm of the already noisy, polluted country that China has become.

If a Chinese citizen (whether currently living in China or living abroad) can put a positive spin on this, then I welcome it.  But please don't tell me I don't know what I'm talking about.  I witness the despair and misery first hand.  Walk down almost any street in any city and you'll be accosted by beggars who have been horribly mangled in some sort of factory accident or traffic melee or

? begging for money.  Children tugging at your sleeves asking for money (while the parents or some sort of adult lurk nearby in a shadowed doorway).  Granted this is not just a "Chinese" thing, there are many countries in the same bad shape or even worse.  The thing is, the Chinese government is a WEALTHY government (or so they say every time they toot their own horn).  There should be more they can do to help the huge percentage of those who barely scrape by from day to day.  Sometimes I think the overly huge national pride is a false pride covering up a lot of pain and sorrow.

the firm's partner confirmed the contamination on August 2nd and the Chinese firm only recall the product last Thursday! WTF - the decision makers of the company should the line up at the Tianamen Square and roll over by tankers and every single cent is taken from their family!

NZ firm warned of China milk risk

Babies suffering kidney stones possibly related to defective baby formula in hospital in Lanzhou, Gansu province, on 9 September
Babies have been suffering kidney stones - rare in young children

A Chinese firm accused of selling milk powder that has made babies unwell was warned in August over the safety of its product, its partner and co-owner says.

New Zealand-based dairy giant Fonterra said it had urged China's Sanlu Group to recall the tainted powder six weeks before Sanlu took adequate action.

The Fonterra farmers' co-operative owns a 43% stake in Sanlu.

More than 400 babies in China have been taken ill after using milk contaminated with the industrial chemical, melamine.

Melamine is used to make plastics and is banned from food. Ingesting it can lead to the development of kidney stones.

At least one child has reportedly died in China as a result of using the contaminated milk, which the firm recalled from sale on Thursday.

'Severe punishment'

In a statement released on Sunday, Fonterra said it had urged Sanlu's board to recall the milk powder as soon as it learnt of the contamination - on 2 August.

"From the day that we were advised of the product contamination issue in August, Fonterra called for a full public recall of all affected product and we have continued to push for this all along," the statement said.

Chinese officials have complained that they were only alerted last Monday of the dangers posed by the milk. They said Sanlu's customers had been complaining about the milk since March.

China's Health Minister, Gao Qiang, said on Saturday that Sanlu "should shoulder major responsibility for this".

He said those responsible for the contamination "would be dealt with severely". Nineteen arrests have so far been made over the scandal, Chinese authorities say.

Some of the tainted milk had been sent to Taiwan but none had been sold to other foreign markets, Mr Gao said.

Melamine has been used by Chinese suppliers of animal feed components to make them appear to have more protein.

It was linked to the formation of kidney stones and kidney failure in pets in the United States last year, leading to thousands of deaths and illnesses.

A fake milk powder scandal in 2004 killed at least 13 babies in China's eastern province of Anhui.

Investigators found that the milk given to these babies had no nutritional value, and the resulting scandal triggered widespread investigations into food safety.
