“HOW DID YOU LET YOURSELF GET LIKE THAT?”
With an “obesity epidemic” raging throughout many parts of the world, the demand for weight-loss surgery is higher than ever before. But why is surgery the answer for so many? Is it a last resort or do patients honestly believe there is no other solution?
In Elsevier’s Social Science & Medicine, researchers drew on a series of interviews with 35 weight-loss surgery patients in England and Scotland , to gather insights into how the overweight account for their size.
  Three overriding themes emerged:
The fat-prone body – All of the participants said their bodies were innately fat-prone as the result of either genetics and/or metabolism. The “fat gene,” as the interviewees noted is like genetic “bad luck.” Individuals talked about other overweight or big-boned family members and how their metabolism just didn’t seem equivalent to other people who could eat much more and still not gain a pound.
Childhood – The majority of participants also said their weight had been a problem since childhood. They were “stocky, chubby, chunky, well-covered.” In some cases the participants said they were pressured to eat everything on their plates. Others were told to, “Think of the starving children in Africa .” Some said their relatives used food as a reward.
Life – Finally, many of the adults said key life events led them to put on the pounds. Illness, injury, divorce, bereavement, new parenthood, new relationships, new jobs, new homes. Life simply got in the way and derailed their attempts at weight management. Men tended to attribute their fall to large quantities of food like curries, beer and fast food. Women spoke of emotional eating as a way to manage both negative and positive changes.
The author draws a few conclusions from these interviews – specifically that the participants refused to think that their weight gain was something that they could “let” happen to them through a lack of will and self-discipline. She believes this point is an important one, and addressing this may be a good first step in the intervention process.
