Richmond Encourages Artists to Take Part in New Immigrant Art Exhibit
| |
6 March 2008
Do you know a new Canadian who is also an artist? Richmond is searching for artists who are new immigrants or refugees to Canada to share their work at the inaugural New Canadians Visual Art Exhibit. The exhibit will run from May 1 to 31, 2008 at the Richmond Cultural Centre, Upper Rotunda, at 7700 Minoru Gate, Richmond.
Submission applications are being accepted until 5 p.m. on March 14, 2008. The entrants may be professional or non-professional artists.
An example of a new Richmond immigrant artist is Zhou Ju Sha. Ten years ago, at age 69, Zhou moved from Shanghai to Richmond to join his children. A renowned artist in China, he graduated from The Fine Art School of Shanghai in 1948 and for over 40 years, he taught art.
“I am very happy living in Richmond,” Zhou says through a translator. “The City’s beauty has inspired me to incorporate western aspects into my traditional style. And this fuels my passion to continue painting.”
Zhou’s paintings have been featured in countless exhibits for decades. Since moving to Richmond they have been exhibited at the UBC Asian Centre several times, the Chinese Cultural Centre and South Arm Community Centre. Zhou will submit some of his favourite work to the May exhibit.
The submission form, listing criteria, is available in English, Chinese, Punjabi and Tagalog. They are available at the Richmond Cultural Centre Information Desk or by contacting Suzanne Greening, Arts Coordinator at the City of Richmond at 604-247-8320. The artwork may be offered for sale by the artist but must stay on display for the duration of the exhibition.
For more information, please contact Suzanne Greening, Arts Coordinator at the City of Richmond, Suzanne.Greening@richmond.ca or 604-247-8320.
