宝马是驰名世界的汽车企业，也被认为是高档汽车生产业的先导。宝马公司创建于1916年，总部设在幕尼黑。80 年来，它由最初的一家飞机引擎生产厂发展成为今天以高级轿车为主导，并生产享誉全球的飞机引擎、越野车和摩托车的企业集团，名列世界汽车公司前20名。宝马也被译为“巴依尔”。宝马公司的全称是"Bayerische Motor en Werhe AG",BMW就是这三个单词的首位字母缩写。
宝马作为国际汽车市场上的重要成员相当活跃，其业务遍及全世界120个国家。1997年生产各种车辆120万辆。宝马汽车主要有3、5、6、7系列汽车及双座蓬顶跑车等。目前，宝马正处于事业兴盛时期：欧宝和福特汽车公司购买它的6缸柴油发动机；劳斯莱斯集团不仅采用它的12缸发动机及电子设备，还与其共同研究生产新的航空发动机；1994 年宝马集团收购了英国陆虎汽车公司(RoverGroup)；1998年，宝马集团又购得了劳斯莱斯汽车品牌；宝马在美国南卡罗来那州的新厂也落成投产，这是在美国的第一家外国高档汽车生产厂。
