纪录片这门课程的好坏和老师对我的印象会影响到日后我在故事片领域的进展。况且，纪录片的教师是前加拿大国家电影委员会的会员，还是比较有权威的。我的英文虽然被公认为很好，但是这也恰恰是我的一个劣势——正因为大家把我当母语是英语的同类看待，所以想当然认为我什么都应该听懂，什么都应该明白，不会给我任何对待外国学生的照顾，而我又不是他们文化的一分子，还要面对很多文化休克问题。所以我赶紧给这个纪录片老师发了一封电子邮件——
Coming across the seas all the way from Beijing, China and having been here for only a few months, I'm still going through cultural shock, more or less. Please excuse me if sometimes I cannot fully join you especially when I'm not familiar with the references, issues, phenomena mentioned in the class here. I was born and grew up in a quite different world, in a different "context" of life, and so I may not fully comprehend or enjoy the subtleties and nuances of the language, the slang and idioms. I guess that's my weakness.
这一段我诚恳地解释说，我跨越了千山万水从中国北京来到这里才几个月，仍然在经历文化休克。所以请您原谅我——如果有时我不是很了解课堂上所谈及的事件、典故、现象。这样先让他增加对我的同情，以后无形中会有些感情照顾——当然，本人也绝非庸才。
I'm determined, however, to learn as much as I can inspite of all the difficulties, and so when I return to China next year I will be a totally different person, who will be able to make all my ideas a reality through the skills and new concepts I have acquired here. China has the world's largest audience and the fastest growing economy, with it's film and television industry booming, too. I'm looking forward to working there soon.
然后我又说，尽管如此，我很有决心尽可能克服困难，这样明年我回国后会判若两人，将会应用我在这里学到的技术和新的理念。中国拥有世界上最多的观众和最快速发展的经济，影视业也在蓬勃发展。我盼望着早日去那里工作。这话暗含的意思是，虽然我不能完全明白你们说什么、看什么，但是我以后又不是拍加拿大的片子，而是拍中国的片子给中国人看。
I just finished my assignments, including the 10 minute documentary outline/proposal. Having had some documentary making experiences and particularly having been the hero of a number of high profile documentary films by China Central Television, by National Geographic Channel and some European TV production companies, I know how frustrating it can be sometimes, and so within the limit of budget and time, I'm developing as much potential as I can to make it a highly entertaining, thought-provoking and touching documentary. It's name is Crouching Tiger Seeking Hidden Dragon. If it is selected to be one of the final six in the end, I'm confident that I will make it the finest student documentary in VFS's history!
这一段先提及本人还尚未提交的作业和纪录片选题，并表示如果我的选题被选中，我会保证让它成为VFS历史上最棒的纪录片作品，也给他一个先入为主的印象！在竞争中，应该时刻走在对手的前面！
