Road rage suspected in truck crash
Vehicle's owner missing after truck clipped another and slammed through Pitt River Bridge guard rail

COQUITLAM - Road rage may have triggered events that led to a red Dodge pickup truck plunging off the Pitt River Bridge into the cold, treacherous river early Sunday, Coquitlam RCMP said Monday.
The red pickup was eastbound over the bridge at about 2:42 a.m. Sunday when it crashed through the guard rail. Police recovered the vehicle, with the passenger door open, later Sunday afternoon, but have not located the registered owner.
"There are horrendous tidal currents there," Cpl. Jane Baptista confirmed.
Baptista said interviews with witnesses indicate the red pickup and a silver Dodge pickup were pulling away from the traffic light at the intersection of the Mary Hill Bypass and Lougheed Highway just before the bridge.
A small white car then overtook the two vehicles from behind, cutting off the red pickup in the process.
The red pickup began to chase the white car, but clipped the silver pickup while abruptly changing lanes, causing the silver pickup to spin around on the bridge. The red pickup went through the guard rail and into the water.
Road conditions were wet and slick at the time, Baptista said.
Police are appealing to the driver of the white car, who may have left the scene without even knowing about the accident, to come forward to be interviewed.
They are also trying to locate an Asian male, aged 16 to 25, who was driving a small, two-door, dark blue vehicle and stopped and spoke to people at the scene.
Baptista said the evidence indicates the accident might have been triggered by road rage -- a problem most often associated with rush-hour driving when tempers are short -- and that it might have been going on for some time before the Pitt River Bridge.
The driver of the silver pickup was not directly involved in the road rage incident, and was not injured.
Police expect to release the name of the registered owner of the red pickup today after contacting relatives.
Anyone who witnessed the accident or knows anything about it is asked to contact Const. Tricia Barton at 604-945-1550 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS. |
