Age of boys arrested in string of seven teller holdups 'pretty shocking' to RCMP



SURREY - Police in Surrey have arrested three young teenagers in connection with a string of bank robberies across the Lower Mainland.

"It's pretty shocking," Surrey RCMP spokesman Cpl. Roger Morrow said Monday, explaining investigators arrested three boys aged 13 to 14 on Saturday.

"Robberies are very common," Morrow said, "but kids this age -- for me it's unheard of."

Morrow said seven banks have been robbed in Surrey, Burnaby and Vancouver within the last six weeks, and that all seven appear to be connected.

He explained the alleged robbers produced no weapons in the holdups, explaining they simply passed notes to tellers. He was not certain if any of them had been carrying concealed weapons.

Morrow added he hadn't heard of bank robbers who are so young, and that he is surprised by the case.

"Typically, what I've seen in my 26 years of service is that kids this age are involved in minor assaults, perhaps minor thefts and break-ins, but not robberies of financial institutions," he said.

"It's just alarming to have kids this age involved in this kind of criminal activity."

Neil Boyd, a criminologist with Simon Fraser University, agreed.

"You expect 13-year-olds [who are committing crimes] to be engaged in things like assault or vandalism," he said in an interview Monday, "but you don't expect them to be engaging in something that is typically a more organized activity carried out by men in their 20s."

Morrow would not say specifically what banks were robbed or disclose the amount of money that was taken. He did say two of the banks were in Surrey, two in Burnaby and three in Vancouver.

Const. Tim Fanning of the Vancouver police department said investigators from Vancouver will be meeting about the case with members of the Surrey RCMP later this week, which is routine during investigations that involve multiple jurisdictions.

He would not provide any other details about the case.

On Monday afternoon, Morrow said one of the boys who had been arrested was scheduled for a court appearance. The other two had been released from custody, he said.

The three boys, who cannot be identified because of their age, were not previously known to police.
