The City:
- Halifax is the biggest city on the east coast of Canada and the capital of the province of Nova Scotia.
- It is at the half-way point between Europe and the West Coast of North America and only less than two hours by air from New York or Toronto.
- The official name of Halifax is Regional Municipality of Halifax. It is made up of the four previous municipalities of Halifax, Dartmouth, Bedford and Halifax County.
- Metro Halifax has a population of 330,000 with seven degree granting universities and colleges, eight major hospitals, various government institutions and industries.
- The Halifax harbor is the second largest natural harbor in the world. It serves as a naval base for Canada and NATO as well as a busy commercial port. It also hosts BIO, the third largest oceanography research center in North America.
- Halifax is also well known for its beautiful sceneries. It has 12 golf clubs, 5 yacht clubs, 171 parks, many lakes, beaches and resorts. It is a very desirable place to live or further one's studies. (Return to top)
The Chinese Community:
- There are less than three thousand Chinese in Halifax.
- They came from Main-land China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia and other South-east Asia countries.
- They can roughly be divided into three groups: the students, the restaurant workers and the professionals.
- There are two Chinese churches in Halifax: Halifax Chinese Christian Church and the Halifax Mission Alliance Church.
- We don't have a China town in Halifax, but there are a few Chinese stores, restaurants, Chinese associations and Chinese student societies that serve the needs of the community. (Return to top)
Accommodation:
If you are a student you should come before the late August rush, in order to find suitable accommodation in terms of lower rent and closer proximity to school. Single rooms usually cost ~Cdn$350/month, while a one room apartment which can be shared by two people costs ~Cdn$700/month.
We'll provide temporary housing (subject to availability) while you look for a permanent accommodation. However we cannot reserve apartments or rooms for you because most places require the occupant to sign a lease.
Please try to come before mid-August because of registration procedures involved. Late registration puts one at risk of not being able to register for the courses required or desired. It is also easier to find better accommodation when there are more choices. (Return to top) Climate:
Halifax enjoys a temperate climate, with four seasons:
Spring (April to mid-June) is cool to mild(5C to 15C) with moderate amount of rain.
Summer (late June to Sept.) is sunny and warm(15C to 25C) with occasional rain.
Fall (Sept.-Nov.) is mild(~10C) and windy with a fair amount of rain.
Winter (Dec. to March) is cold(--15C to -5C), windy and snowy. (Return to top) Before You Come:
We suggest you to bring a good raincoat and warm winter clothing (down jacket). Finally, we would like to remind you that the electric voltage in Canada is 110V (50HZ).
