To: Monamis - Immigration related family matters

Hi, Monamis,

You know, in this forum, all of us are immigrants or will be immigrants soon.

One of the hot topics we have here is: if all the members of one family should come to Canada at the same time. I guess this question itself may sound very strange to you, but it is quite common in the Chinese immigrants that wife and kids stay here to keep their Canadian residence (become citizen 3 years later) while husband makes money in China (usually they have much better career development opportunities in China).

I would like to know how local people would do if you were in the same situation.

Thanks!

Ni hao ma, FCL,
and XIE XIE for the question,
it is a very difficult one,
in Canada, and most Western Countries, I think the family unit is very important, and the Husband being visible and being directly participating in daily family life is very important.

I think the family life has become more dependant on both wife and husband working now, because of the economics, and they must rely on one another to also both participate in the raising of the family.

I know many Chinese Students live in  house here in Richmond British Columbia and Area where parents have invested in houses, and send their children to live here, providing them with luxaries and cars, and houses , and the students are much too young to realize the values , and get involved with criminal activities, car racing , prostitution, parties, drugs and so on.

The parents being in china feel this $$$ they are giving the kids is going to tuition, and many times it is not.

happy to say that this is not a majority , but a minority of youth immigrating to Canada to go to University here,

hope that helps out,
and perhaps i spoke out too much

thx! Monamis, you know Chinese Mandarin!!! OK, i will tell you another one, which is very important. Just pronounce the following 3 words in English, WALL EYE KNEE, and you get the Chinese sentence: I Love You, interesting? You know what, this is one way we remember English words, for example, THANK YOU, in Chinese it sounds like "3 grams of oil",   haha...

I will reply you later on when I have time. You have a good weekend!!

Cheers!

Wo ai ni, = wll eye knee, = i love you
but that phrase is not used in polite chinese in public, as is personal. and the Chinese language is very gentle in nature and they do not like to talk like that in public...

Anyway all is well, hope to talk more with you Franck

you are right, Monamis, Chinese do not use that pharse in public, this is also a cultrural difference between west and east, i think. In China, even husband and wife, specially those with older age, do not say those 3 words each other. I told you that only because it's a funny way to learn Chinese.

Re. the topic in this post, I don't know any western families that are as same as the Chinese families I described above. Yes, I guess you are rigth, family responsibility and kids' education are very important factors.

Fch XIe Xie i would like to learn your language, and try to show the respect that is prominent in its structure and idealisms,
It would be most kind to learn well, and be able to express myself.
you are a beautiful and exciting culture.

I used to teach Mandarin in Berlitz Language Center in HK. You know there are many business people from western countries in Hong Kong, who want to learn Chinese so they can communicate with their business partners or colleagues. Some students told me that Chinese may be the most difficult language in the world. But many of them were doing quite well.

How do you learn Chinese then? Do you take any Mandarin class or you learn by yourself?

Hi, Monamis

Yes, Berlitz has a creative way to learn languages, basiclly it copies the way kids learn their first language. Hope you also find it's helpful.

In the past 2 moths, most of my spare time has been spent on this web site . As you may know, this is a new site, which needs more efforts and time to take care of. Glad to see more and more friends coming here and sharing each other. And I am very glad that we could make it happen. What more exciting is: in the future, we will probably set up a NPO (no profit organization) that will own this site, organize activities related to immigrants. As the site grows, we hope it can cover its own operating cost, and contribute the balance, if any, to the immigrant group or any other groups in need in the society. This is the dream, , hope we can make it, with help from all of us, including you.
