Engineering and construction giant SNC-Lavalin plans to lay off 4,000 people starting next year as it restructures its worldwide operations.
The job cuts, most of which will be complete by the end of 2015, amount to 9 per cent of the company’s total workforce.
As a result, about 1,000 workers will be laid off in Canada, the company said in a press release on Thursday.
The Montreal-based company says the job cuts — which will sharply reduce profits this year but save money over the longer term — are part of ongoing efforts to get out of underperforming business segments, particularly in the mining sector.
