Thank you for taking the time to write.
New Democrats judge major resource projects, like pipelines, on their merits – we look at issues like environmental sustainability, community consultation and economic benefit through things like value-added jobs. Of course, all pipelines need to adhere to the highest possible safety and environmental standards consistent with the principles of sustainable development. We need strong environmental assessment legislation, in contrast to the attacks on environmental regulation put forward by the Harper government. Communities need to be meaningfully consulted on projects. The reality is that provinces will be developing their natural resources. The question is how we develop them sustainably, while protecting the environment and supporting value-added jobs in Canada.
Regarding the proposed west-east pipeline, we feel that moving oil from west to east makes sense. We recognize that it can be win-win-win situation. Better price for the producer, more jobs in Canada, and better energy security. However, it's not responsible to go ahead with any project unless there's a strong environmental review regime in place. We know that the Conservatives just want to rubber stamp these projects. In contrast, we will ensure the public interest is served.
Again, we appreciate hearing from you.
All the best,
Office of NDP Leader
Tom Mulcair
