1. a big shot = an important person 大腕儿,大亨
2. a breath of fresh air 使人耳目一新的人

1# lamjin Very useful expressions! Thank you! However, I am afraid there is a mistake. As far as I know, Dear John Letter is a letter written to a husband or boyfriend by his spouse or significant other to inform him their relationship is over.

很多英文翻成成中文会有歧义, 这也是我为什么总是让筒子们查英英字典。
这些是网上转贴过来的。 只是希望一个引导的作用, 至于什么场合用的合适, 需要个人的研究学习。



另外, 这个表达我以前的学习笔记贴子里说过, 应该是 Dear John  letter, 翻译成分手信更准确些, 这是女孩写给男孩的。

在我的帖子里还提到另外一个表达,男孩写给女孩的分手信, 叫Dear Jane letter 。

big shot---An important or influentialperson.

2 breath of freshair --- a welcome relief;

"the new management was like a breath offresh air"

3 Achilles heel---a small but fatal weakness
4 be all ears----------Acutelyattentive: Tell your story-we're all ears!
5 be all eyes----towatch something or someone with a lot of interest.
We were all eyesas the prince and princess emerged from the palace.
6 a wet blanket(informal)--someone who does or says something that stops other people fromenjoying themselves.
I don't want to bea wet blanket, but you really must play your music more quietly or you'lldisturb the people next door.
7 chip in (onsomething) and chip something in (on something)
----to contributea small amount of money to a fund that will be used to buy something. Ex: Couldyou chip in a dollar on the gift, please?
----chip in (onsomething) (for someone) to contribute money toward a gift for someone. Ex:Wouldyou please chip in on the present for Richard? Will you chip in for Randy?
8 go/sell like hotcakes----if things are going like hot cakes, people are buying a lot of themvery fast (often in continuous tenses)
EX: The book hasonly just been published and copies are already selling like hot cakes in both Britain and America.

9 butterflies inone's stomach----a nervous feeling in one's stomach. (*Typically: get ~; have~; give someone~.)
Whenever I have tospeak in public, I get butterflies in my stomach.
10 two thumbs up----Ahand gesture indicating strong approval; The strong approval itself.
11 apple of(one's) eye------One that is treasured: Her grandson is the apple of her eye.
12 pull(someone's) leg ----To play a joke on; tease or deceive.
13 break one'sback ---- work very hard, like a slave
14 twenty-four-seven,24/7, adv------ Informal twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week;constantly; all the time.
EX: consultantswould no longer be available 24/7
15 for a song------Fig. cheaply. (As if the singing of a song were payment. *Typically: buysomething ~; get something ~; pick up someone ~.)
EX: No one elsewanted it, so I picked it up for a song.
I could buy this house for a song, becauseit's so ugly.
16 bucket down --------Torain heavily.
17 a backroom boy----someonewho does a lot of work in the type of job where they are not often seen by thepublic (often plural)
EX: Editors arevery much the backroom boys of the film world.

学习了。多谢。
最近才听到chinese whipser的典故。
一般在口语中用到idiom会有画龙点睛的效果。我记得的有:
cost me a leg and an arm
don’t beat around bush
better later than never
man propose it, god dispose it
great minds think alike
其他想不起来了。。。

I just wonder how many can you remember and use it? For me, only several of them.
