Impression of A New Immigrant's Dairy Dairy is the trail of heart's growth. By reading Susanna's 10-year-dairy http://www.ourdream.ca/forums/forum.php?mod=viewthread&tid=5582&extra=&authorid=358&page=12, I witness that her heart grows stronger and broader in Vancouver.
Susanna is the one wandering between staying Canada and going back China. She was thrilled when she got her first in-office job as an interior designer in a Vancouver local design studio. But only 2 months later, she felt depressed about her career future. She worried the unskilled office labor job will make her a frog boil in lukewarm water and in 20 years she will lost all the opportunities to reach her career apex. Vancouver simply equals to better living condition, lower social class, no real career, while return China can open a door for her career pursuit. Her puzzle is career vs. exploring the world, Guangzhou vs. Vancouver. I am several years older than Susanna used to be at that time. I feel she could pursuit her career dream in Canadian way. In another word, well balance work and life and focus on something really interesting.Susanna somehow found her way. She dealt with hard time by identifying her difficulties and rating her own performance. Her major difficulties are language and space sense (as an interior designer). Once a while, she rated the difficulty of these two. Her funny, methodical and placid way of life made her a purposeful and happy creature in Vancouver. I kind of like her.
Way of improving English
Language is just a tool for communication. For new immigrates, strong communication ability is effectively expressing yourself rather than speaking perfect British English. For this reason understanding what Canadians say and responsing properly, is what I need to practice.
I practice in this way: watching US TV series "the House of Cards" for listening clearly and keep a diary for writing clearly. 。。

A lot of errors.
Copy news papers first. Understand?
Good idea indeed. Thanks ashima15.Newspapers could give perfect writing samples.
But read which newspaper? For me, it is painful to read national editorials. The long sentences can make me dazzle. Moreover, the national newspapers are shrinking and diminishing. But local newspapers are growing, because every local community has and needs local news.
I am choosing my landing place. Reading different local news which would give me a sense of local life is very meaningful for me.
I googled. Metholand.com covers about 30 high quality local newspapers with stable circulation, but I could not access to any of them. Finally, I get access to Calgary Herald. So far, there isn’t any interesting stories there.
Then, next question is: how to make English newspaper reading not so boring?

montrealgazette.com
