Working in office
Hi, Monamis,I have worked for an architecture design company 2 monthes and find some things are different with China.
When I worked in Beijing, my co-workers and I were surfing on internet or some private things sometimes during work time when works were not so busy. Now, I rarely see any my co-worker spend time on private business things. They are keeping work and just chat or reply emails sometimes. Is this the common situation here? As my understanding, the boss pay your 8 hours and you can't do any private business in this 8 hours, right?
Sometime I am so busy and I am not sure can I do spend sometimes to study drawings of other projects or local architecture codes? Or I should tell boss current works don't keep me busy and ask for more works? Or just wait for new arragement later?
Thanks.~ "Sometime I am so busy and I am not sure can I do spend sometimes to study drawings of other projects or local architecture codes? Or I should tell boss current works don't keep me busy and ask for more works?"
Well, I don't understand this sentence, because it seems contracted to each other. In the first part you said that you are very busy, but in the next sentence, you said that you are not busy at all, so that you want to have more work to do. So, you are busy or not busy?
My opinion is that it is very import to let your boss know what you are doing, then the boss can consider it. It is also a good excuse if anything goes wrong. Yours boss can't blame you because he has already known everything. Sorry, i use wrong tenses.『大汗』
I were busy a week ago and not busy now.
We will have a project meeting tomorrow and I hope I will have more works to do. Hi, Laurence,
You are definitely right. I just told boss 5 minutes ago and feel better. He said he will arrange works and agree that I can pay extra time on studing of drawings and code.
Thank you very much~ Well, congratulations!『开心』 As you can find in my previous post, the Canadian culture are low context culture, which means you have to express your idea very directly.
BTW, see? The Hofstede culture dimension is very useful. 『酷』 But in this morning, a co-worker tells me no need to say that!
Hah? But I still think you are right.
Thanks. where did you colleague come from? Well, I think it depends on the character of one person and the culture where he comes from. Some body just choose not to communicate, it is a normal thing. However, in some culture, people tend to be very directly. Post by 兔子

Wow, I do know that the bosses, or people you work for are demanding more concentration, from employees, and they are demanding more productivity, salaries are higher in Canada, Cost of doing things is much higher in many cases, so we need to get as much productivity and quality as possible out of employees.
you are required to work, in some places it is not as strict as in others, but you doo need to pay attn, and get the work done,
then can relax or request more work as ou suggest
Suzanna also works for architecture, and has experianced the same feelings and frustration. i think it is a case of becoming familiar with your work, they way things are done here in Canada,
Then make known your energy ,knowledge and enthusiasm,
one thing very important
Never quite !!,Stay Calm, Pay Attention, and don't be afraid to ask questions. My colleague is from Yugoslavia and 49 years old, so i think maybe she has different idea with us.

I am happy to get more knowledge about local architecture industry.
I know there is always gap after you finish a project whatever in China or in Canada. But I think I ammore nervous than in China because I haven't idea about boss here.『大汗』
