英语中的奇怪现象

大家一起学:

a) there isno egg in an eggplant, nor ham in a hamburger, and neither an apple   nor a pine in a pineapple;

b) Englishmuffins weren't invented in England;         

c) Frenchfries weren't invented in France;
         
d) sweetmeats are candies while sweetbreads - which aren't sweet, aremeat;
         
e) quicksandcan work slowly;
         
f) boxingrings are square;
         
g) a Guinea Pig is neither from Guinea nor a pig;
         
h) writerswrite but fingers don't 'fing', grocers don't 'groce' and hammersdon't 'ham';
         
i) the plural of tooth is teeth, but the plural of booth isn't 'beeth';
         
j) more than one goose is 'geese', but more than one moose isn't 'meese';
         
k) you can   make amends but not one 'amend' (stick that in your indices - but notin your indexes);
         
l) if youtake a bunch of odds and ends and remove all but one, what is thatcalled?
         
m) though weknow what a vegetarian eats (vegetables), we don't know what to offeran humanitarian?
         
n) people recite at a play and play at a recital;
         
o) goods areshipped by truck but a cargo is sent by ship;
         
p) noses runand feet smell;
         
q) slimchance and fat chance mean the same, while a wise man and a wise guymean the opposite;
         
r) a houseburns up as it burns down (and gets 'razed' to the ground);
         
s) one fillsin a form by filling it out;
         
t) an alarmgoes off by going on;
         
u) when thestars are out, they are visible; when the lights are out, they areinvisible;
         
v) Buickdoesn't rhyme with quick?
         
w) it's good   if a vacuum sucks;
         
x) the thirdhand on a watch is called the 'second' hand';
         
y) if a wordis misspelt in a dictionary, we will never know;
         
z) 'slowdown' and 'slow up' means the same;
         
i) tug boats   actually push;
         
ii) The song'Take me out to the Ball Game' is sung when the punters are already intheir seats - at the ball game;
         
iii) the'stands' are made for sitting;
         
iv) 'afterdark' means 'after light';
         
v) when toldto 'expect the unexpected', we then expect the unexpected;
         
vi) 'phonics' is not pronounced the way it sounds;
         
vii) 'Allthe world is a stage'. So where is the audience sitting?
         
viii) 'bra'is singular and 'knickers' (a.k.a. panties) plural;
         
ix) suits gointo garment bags; garments go into a suitcase;
         
x) we wash   bath towels, when we are supposedly clean when using them;
         
xi) glue   doesn't stick to the inside of the tube;
         
xii) teachers taught, but no preacher 'praught';
         
xiii) theweather can be hot as hell one day, and cold as hell the next;
         
xiv) we parkon driveways and drive on parkways;
         
xv) I'venever seen a horseful carriage or a strapful gown, nor met a sung heroor experienced requited love;
         
xvi) andI've never met someone who was combobulated, gruntled, ruly orpeccable;
         
xvii)'abbreviated' is such a long word (and so are these roman numerals).

第一句, eggplant 里没有egg, hamburger 里没有ham, pineapple 里即没有apple 也没有 pine, 难道不奇怪吗?

b) English muffin 不是在英格兰发明的,但为啥叫 ENGLISH MUFFIN呢?
其实就有点像国内的烧饼,这边买不到烧饼, 就用这个替代吧 http://www.thekneadforbread.com/wp-content/uploads/english_muffin.jpg 。

我知道这个muffin应该是法国发明的吧,法语称" 马粪"
