Common scoring among non-native speakers in ordinary schools

Elementary 500 - 2,500 words 2 - 6 years of school English average: 1,500
Intermediate 2,000 - 5,000 words 4 - 9 years of school English average: 3,000
Advanced 4,500 - 9,000 words 6 - 10 years of school English average: 6,000

Level 1 (elementary / intermediate)
Up to 8,000 words
You have studied English for a few years at school. You read simple texts, but you find English newspapers and magazines quite difficult. You have to look up too many words. You find it difficult to understand English on TV.
Level 2 (intermediate / advanced)
Up to 15,000 words
You get along quite well in everyday situations. At work you probably want somebody else to do the talking. You can read English newspapers and use your dictionary to look up words you don't understand.
Level 3 (advanced / very advanced)
Up to 25,000 words
Your English is excellent. You use English at work and in everyday life without problems. You have probably lived, or spent a long time, in an English-speaking country. |
